Mama

Mama 03:39
People run away from my breathing It’s a waste of time Feeding on our pace to hide In our world I wait for my Beating pulse of fate So I tease on every state of mind Mama hold me to you I have wandered too soon I was lost in her eyes Mama control me, I’m doomed Seed a state to consume All the light behind my eyes Step into my circle I’m wasting all my worth on one Tasting all our dirt for once It tastes of all my dreams for some Unknown reason I can’t speak, I’ve tried Mama hold me to you I have wandered too soon I was lost in her eyes Mama control me, I’m doomed Seed a state to consume All the light behind my eyes In our world I wait for my Beating pulse of fate So I tease on every state of mind

about

At Swim are very proud to be releasing the debut single by ODDA, “Mama”. Oli (ODDA) cites Bon Iver, Andy Shauf, John Prine, Phoebe Bridgers and Kendrick Lamar as heavy influences on his music. An identifiably British lyrics and singing style is bolstered by widescreen US-style instrumental sound. The record is sprinkled with UK and US Grammy-winning talent; co-produced and mixed by Ian Dowling (Adele, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Bombay Bicycle Club), and mastering duties being covered by Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone (The National, Bon Iver, Bob Dylan, Taylor Swift).

The song was written in 2019 in what ODDA describes as "a total surprise, a kind of out of body experience - one of those moments when you feel a song has just been given to you". It took another 2 years for Oli to divine what the song's lyrics revealed about where his head was at the time. "I didn't fully appreciate it then, but I think I had a lot of uncertainty about who I was and what I was doing. I was worried that I was drifting towards doing nothing with my life, that I'd fucked it up somehow, and maybe I just wanted someone to tell me everything was going to be okay. I think that's where the reference to the mother came from - the need to be comforted and feel safe without judgement. That's my best guess. I'm sure it will mean other things to other people and I'm fine with that. I'm not someone who believes the songwriter has a monopoly on the meaning of a song. That's what I love about good music, and art in general - there's room for the listener to bring something to it as well."
