about

At Swim are proud to continue releasing music by French-Canadian composer, Le Grand Salon. His work is always surprising and challenging, adjectives that are often used but rarely merited. We hope you enjoy this new EP as much as we do.

N.B. The .wav version of this EP is in 24bit for a premium listening experience.

From Le Grand Salon:

"This cycle in four parts is based on the prime tone row from Anton Webern's Symphony op. 21 as shown below.

A - F# - G - G# - E - F - B - Bb - D - Db - C - Eb

All the melodic and harmonic elements are derived, in one way or another, from this dodecaphonic tone row.
The symmetry and atonal nature of this set of 12 sounds really pushed my writing skills as a composer. Finding new ways and techniques to arrange and rearrange
these discordant building blocks into something closer to the aesthetic of Le Grand Salon proved to be an inspiring creative challenge.

The concepts of architecture and impermanence came to mind after the first part was nearly completed, after I had to try and put together these sounds into a logical arrangement.
Well, logical to me at least.
As it is often the case for me, I found inspiration in the city.
The artificial elements of the city. Never the people.
The buildings, the roads, the lights, all removed from their human implications.
The inevitable decay of everything.
Rust. Erosion. Vert de gris.
The slow and relentless processes of deterioration.

So I tried to put it in music the best I could.

The construction. The deconstruction. The reconstruction. The unconstruction.
The architecture of impermanence and the impermanence of architecture.

Then after the fourth part, I said all I had to say.

I hope you'll enjoy the sounds.
Thanks for listening."
